New Housing Minister Nick Smith has wasted no time getting stuck into the housing affordability debate.
He has developed a discussion paper intended to review the way developers are charged for infrastructure. Development charges have been cited as one of the reasons it is so expensive to develop new property. They have increased on average by more than 300% over the past 10 years. Suggestions in the discussion paper include capping the charges, reinstating the ability to appeal, providing discounts to developers of certain kinds of property and abolishing them entirely.
